Jesca Hoop:

Is one of the most original, vocally ranged, and generally talented artists around. Do yourself a favor, listen to her album, Kismet.

Explosions in the Sky

Purely instrumental. General band arrangement minus the vocalists, and in this case, it's a good thing there aren't any. All around brilliant, if you're in the mood for something instrumental that's not techno or classical music.

Harvey Danger

You may remember them from such productions as Flagpole Sitter, Flagpole Sitter, and Flagpole Sitter. They recently released a new album much more refined than their previous efforts of King James Version and Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone. Though, in my personal opinion, WHATMMG has some brilliant songs on it, their latest album, Little by Little is much better to listen through. You may not like it, and you can trip on a curb and rupture your face, because Sean Nelson is an awesome vocalist, and you wish you were that cool.

Interpol

Turn on the Bright Lights is one of the best things to ever happen to music, and if you listen to it the whole way through at least 3 times, and you don't have an epiphany causing you to realize what I have just said, it means you have something wrong with the music receptors in your brain. (no, really, there was a study on this)

The Notwist

Okay, seriously though, I only like one album by them, which is Neon Golden. But as far as that album goes, I completely love it. It's like nothing I've ever heard elsewhere. It's rainy day music, and it's slightly strange. Before you listen to the whole album, listen to Off the Rails, Pilot, and Pick Up the Phone. If you don't listen to those songs, your first born son will die during labor. No really, it happened to my friend (haha, friend). Okay, no it didn't, but it would've.

Stars

I'M NOT GAY, SHUT UP.

The Go Find

I really don't know what to say about them. Their lead singer, with his seemingly synthesized (yeah, leave me alone) vocals, does not vary enough in sound to warrant listening to more than one album. I won't go so far as to say this music is epic or anything, but their album Miami is still one of my favorites.

Psapp

This band is so refreshingly different and good at the same time that I don't understand how it happened. Listen to the album Tiger, My Friend. Then listen to the rest of their music.

The Faint

This band rocks SO HARD IT MAKES ME SICK. Seriously, I know no band that comes even close to rocking this hard, ever.

Dashboard Confessional

This man's beautiful and reflective voice represents his sadness for high schoolesque problems in his life, that he seems to still be having long after. Wait sorry, now I'm just making fun of him. Seriously, what's wrong with this man? And no I don't like a few of his songs from a one of his older albums. What?

Ben Folds

I have no commentary, I just really like this guy.

Wilco

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is in my opinion, their best work. Wilco is something some might consider to be boring. If you actually give it the chance and have musical tastes that support such kinds of music, you will have a special place in your illegally downloaded music collection for this one.

The Postal Service

Okay, so, I know that everyone's 13 year old sister with just slightly out of the ordinary taste in music loves this album, and that most people probably consider it overrated at this point. I don't really care, Give Up is one of my favorite albums anyway, and if you don't love its poppy electronica based complexity, you're probably just too cool for school.

Superdrag

I'm mostly just mentioning these guys as a tribute to their actions, rather than their music. They had themselves a one hit wonder back in the day (see: who sucked out the feeling), and when a record company funded their next album, with the guidelines of making washed out radio music, the band instead decided to ignore instructions and make the album however they wanted (see: unradiofriendly), and produced Head Trip in Every Key. Though I really like this album, it's not for everyone, and I won't pretend it's amazing or anything. Good job sticking it to the man and ending your careers, assholes.

Nirvana and Elliott Smith

Way to kill yourselves, guys. Seriously, I've never heard anything as depressing as you guys talking in between songs. I liked your music though, thanks!

Sublime

Yeah, you too Bradley Nowell, you dumb bastard. But no, really, I loved your self titled album, and at least you knew how to kill yourself like a man (by accident, with drugs (a drug (heroin))).

Alright then, that should do it for the list. This could've included about 400 more of every genre that no one wants to hear about for the 400th time (what, you don't like Yanni?), but I wanted to limit them to bands I think people should listen to more/I could effortlessly make fun of (see: blink182).

If anyone wants a full list of music they should probably not listen to, just post your email address, and I will email you a list of my music collection.

Tomorrow, I'll listen to the bands you guys just listed so I can come up with a worthwhile response.

Message for people that disagree with bands I've been mentioning:

The bands mentioned are about 1/300th of the bands I like, so getting on my case about such a small fraction is kind of silly.

Oh, listen to Hood, as well. In my opinion, The Notwist must be huge Hood fans, since they used to be this crazy hardcore band (or was it punk, I cannot remember), then all of the sudden, they started sounding a bit like Hood.

Everything I mentioned might be kind of hard to find on Limewire etc..., but will be worth it.

Probably.

Now that I'm drunk, I'll explain, even though you probably already looked it up.

13&God is Themselves (underground hip-hop group signed to Anticon) and The Notwist (that band you like, and you're right, Neon Golden is their only good album). It's quite good, looking at the bands you like, you'd also like Beirut, and Andrew Bird. For Beirut, everything he's released so far is good, for Andrew, I only liked Armchair Acryphobia (something like that).

You'd probably also like Air (get Talkie Walkie), and I have a feeling you'd dig The Jesus and Mary Chain.

You're probably already a Flaming Lips fan...

______________

I'm listening to them on myspace, and they sound great so far. Like if the notwist did another good album. Love Beirut and Air, and you're right about the flaming lips.

As for Andrew Bird (sounds familiar) and The Jesus and Mary Chain, I definitely have to check them out. By the way, thanks!

MC chris. I saw this guy live in ATL and he rocked the fucking house down. Which was impressive considering there were only about 100 people there. It was a small venue, but I like those more than sitting in a fucking arena while the drunk chick 5 rows behind you projectile vomits to edge of the stage because she was drinking heavily to impress her douchebag boyfriend who tries(unsuccesfully(sp?)) to kick your ass when you suggest perhaps she would be better off blowing chunks in the bathroom/parking lot instead of on people who paid $45 fucking dollars for this concert. (<---longest sentence I've ever written) Where was I? Oh yeah, MC Chris. If you watch Adult Swim you'll probably know him better as MC Pee Pants(ATHF), or Hesh (Sealab 2021). Anyway, his site is MCchris.com (no www!) and there you can download his first album, 'Life's a bith and I'm her pimp'. I suggest 'Fett's Vette' or 'The Tussin' if this your first time hearing him.

Purely instrumental.

Not true. Both Harvey Danger and Dashboard Confessional suck balls.

________

Harvey Danger owns my face, regardless of whether or not they suck. And did you not catch the (not so)subtle hints regarding Dashboard Confessional?

Also, when is Explosions in the Sky not instrumental? I imagine I stand corrected, as I've not heard all their stuff, I'm asking because I'd like to hear what their vocals might be like.

============

They have a track called "Have You Passed Through This Night?" which has spoken lyrics in it.

Didn't actually read the Dashboard bit as I couldn't bring myself to, but fair enough.

http://www.shamrockfest.com/

It's at RFK on 3/15. Me, my roommate, and my boyfriend are all going, and if you were gonna go I was gonna buy you a beer. I'm nice like that.

I gave up on Kegs-n-Eggs last year when I almost got trampled to death waiting for the bathroom. It's just not the small festival it used to be. Hopefully, Shamrock Fest will prove a better experience since it's at a much larger venue than Lulu's. I will miss being drunk and running out in DC traffic at 9am though. There's nothing like scaring work-bound communters and then trying to appear as sober as possible while asking the bellhop at the Ritz Carlton if you can their bathroom.

I like suggestions like this, I never seem to be disappointed.

I won't say what bands, I don't want to be accused of trying to 'out do' the next reviewer, or whatever Ax said. But my 7 year old son can play C'mere on the guitar. I don't know how he got into them, they ain't my cup of tea, though that song reminds me of Editors who I do like. But anyway, he is the biggest fan ever.

Ahem.

Explosions in the Sky are pretty good. The Cancer Conspiracy is the best instrumental band in the universe, though. Hands down.

Interpol sucks nick for dickles.

The Faint is just... well, I want to hit you in the face with a large blunt object for thinking they "rock hard" when in fact they "suck."

Dashboard makes me want to punch small children in the kidneys. The guy is a whiny bitch, however, some of their tunes are pretty catchy, if you remove his vocals.

The Postal Service isnt a real band because they are jackasses. They never even sat down with each other to record. They recorded with recordings of each others "musical" contributions. AKA they fail.

Nirvana. Well, Who didnt see that one coming?

Elliot Smith was a weirdo.

Sublime is pretty cool, but I can only take so much of them. I think it's because when I grew up, everyone and their fucking brother listened to Sublime so I grew sick of them. But hey, they're ok in small doses.

all the other bands I never listened to so I cannot comment.

music is one of those things where no one will ever agree on one solid thing. i.e. most people think hendrix was the greatest guitarist ever where as i think it was stevie ray vaugn. however, there are some concrete things people should all agree on like the fact that U2 is terrible and Bono is a douche bag. i guess what really matters is that one should like music that has a meaning. music that was made for a reason. music that was born from emotion like hate, anger, love, sorrow and when you listen to it, you can feel it. i dont know. i've been a musician since i was 9 so to me, music is more than just a way to pick up chicks and make money.

i guess the moral of the story is: to each his own as long as you're into it for the right reasons.

word up.

One of the most depressing things ever happened to me recently.

I walk into the local music store, trying to find some johnny winter that isn't a "best of" or a collection album, and as I was checking out, the kid near the front desk asked me about my shirt.

I, wearing a Led Zeppelin shirt, as one does, was asked "who are they?"

That is not a band you play around other people who have not heard them.
===
It's interesting you say that, because I think Wilco's music is very accessible, relative to a lot of indie bands. The music is interesting without being too experimental, and just moody enough to be quite touching at times without being emo. The music and the vocals sound familiar to me. I'd definitely play them for someone the first time. As a matter of fact, I burned a handful of CDs for someone on uber once, and one was Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

I agree with you on that one. The thing is, I could have posted a list of hundreds of bands that are popular, and everyone has heard of, but everyone has already heard of them, so what's the point? The reason I posted about Jesca Hoop and Psapp and the like, was not to be obscure, but because many times I have thought to myself, "man, more people should know about these people, they're really great."

As you can see, a list with that intent in mind is probably going to come off looking like exactly what you said.

Music posts always seem to degenerate into "my musical taste is more intelligent/obscure/deep than yours." It brings out the kind of people who read the minutae of CD liner notes to impress other mortals with their vast worldly knowledge of music.
