rough year - both of the huskies developed health problems and had to be put down. We also lost the cat from apartment days. If you ever get a chance to lose three pets in the space of two months I highly recommend developing a drinking problem.
We were going to wait until spring to get a puppy, but I just couldn't stand not having a dog. We got Bodie on Saturday. According to Iams.com I'm a 77% match for an Australian Shepherd. My only question is, what did I do to piss off the people at Iams?

I love when they lay down on their cute little bellies with their hind legs stretched out.

I don't like dogs. But my girlfriend made me watch all those "Dog Whisperer" episodes and I have learned a lot about dogs and more about their owners.
According to the show, dogs can never go wrong by themselves... if dogs behave badly, it's because of their owner's "energy".
The term "energy" is used as Ceasar Millan, the show's star and host, would use it. It is not used in the traditional scientific meaning. In Caesar Milan's universe, "Energy" equates to "body language". I guess the rednecks he talks to respond better to "Change your energy to calm and assertive" than "Use a calm and assertive body language to train your dog".
Anyway, it is a common mistake for pet owners to get puppies too soon after the death of a dog. The owners are not yet finished grieving and the puppies perceive this as "weak energy". The dog will immediatly try to dominate "weak energy" owners and become their "pack leader". These puppies become antisocial monsters later on because their "weak" owners never were able to discipline their dog properly. They tolerate "cute" behavior that later on become unacceptable or dangerous when the dog is fully grown.
I bet Bodie will "walk" you and Sam before long. You won't be walking it.

Maybe you should have him chew on Shlongy's face. No, wait. That might be considered inhumane to the puppy.

Don't let that cute face fool you this thing is the spawn of Satin. Yesterday was his first day at home all day by himself. He managed to get the baby gate down and spent the day shredding houseplants, eating the cat food, and making me a lovely special little birthday present under the dining room table. At least we had sense enough to take down the Christmas tree this weekend.
My strategy is to wear him out playing fetch until he passes out. I fear I'm just getting him in better shape so he can go on even longer rampages. I just gave him a pig ear to keep him from chewing on my power cord. I am pretty sure that I'm the "dog parent" equivalent of one of those people who plop their kid in front of cartoons or a video game.
He's 9 weeks old now. That means that it's going to be 9 months and 3 weeks before he transforms into a "dog".
This weekend we're going on our first hike. Maybe that will get him to sleep past 5AM.

The huskies both ended up with hip dysplasia. We put it off as long as we could but it got to the point where they couldn't stand up and pretty much just laid around whimpering all day. We had to put Alex down in May. We spent as much time as we could this summer with Nikki. She made it until early November. They turned 12 last winter so I suppose that's normal life expectancy for a husky, but that doesn't make it any easier somehow.
We decided to go with something a little smaller this time. That and huskies are not really all that well suited to the climate here. The summers were always rough on them. It's been odd that Bodie gets cold. That is a new experience for us. We went smaller because part of what made it so hard with Nikki and Alex was that they were too big to pick up. It's hard to really take care of a dog that can't stand up when you can't lift him.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOES!
Hip dysplasia is horrible. We've been lucky that our 14yo German Shepherd seems to have missed the gene or whatever. I can only hope our two huskies don't get it as well.
Anywho, cute puppy. I'm not much of a fan of anything under 50-60lbs, but Australian Shepherds are a good way to go. Be prepared to be playing non-stop with this one.

Sorry to hear about your pups, it's never easy to lose a pet.
That is the second cutest puppy I've ever seen. Mine of course, would be the cutest. :) Also, small dogs are great, just watch out for poop behind your furniture!

Your loss saddens me, but your puppy is so cute it actually hurts my eyes to look directly at him. And now, in spite of my strict no-pets policy, I want a puppy. Damn you, just damn you.
I can't handle pets. Cleaning and bathing and feeding and occasionally wiping up barf is one thing, but I swear if I have to watch another one die, it'll kill me too. No more pets, no sir-ee.
Good luck to you.
============
I too, felt that way at one time, but I thought about it for a long time. Cleaning up barf, piddle, and shit is a small price to pay for the joy brought my small furry critters. They love you unconditionally and make you feel good.
Go get a puppy or a kitty. Watching one pass away is hard, but consider the joy before that happens. You'll thank yourself later. . . . .

Smaller dogs tend to live longer, as well.
Ever see a small dog, not over five pounds, go fearlessly after a 100 lb monster? No fear, no hesitation.

We're heading to the vet today for that first little puppy check up. We talked to her about what type of dog to get when we were still in the research phase of this. She thought this would be a good one because they need attention 24 hours a day and so do I so it should work out great.
Jack, we ended up with another cat this summer. When the dogs were starting on that downward spiral they were not eating well. We were doing anything we could to get them to eat and started feeing them canned dog food. We were not 100% careful about rinsing the cans before we tossed them in the recycling bin so the food smell ended up attracting a cat that would later become "Bean".
We started feeding Bean so naturally he never left. Then one day I noticed that he was limping. It seemed to get worse so we took him to the vet. $300 later and after two weeks of stuffing pills down his throat he was pretty solidly our cat.
It is amazing how quickly a cat can go from stray outside cat to demanding lord of the house indoor cat...and alarm clock.

We have cats. I used to think they came and went and I wasn't attached. Then one of them had a thyroid problem that was curable with either $1200 worth of radioactive Iodine or a .22 round that costs less than one cent. Amazing how fast we decided to spend the $1200. On a goddam cat.
And you're right about your boss' father-in-law. Seen it, wouldn't wish it on anyone.

In 2003 we lost a 12 year old Golden Retriever-Malamute to cancer. In 2006 our 17 year old Border Collie died, due to old age. A year ago we lost another Border Colliem also almost 17, to old age.
We now have a four year old Australian Shepherd-Malamute mix and a pure-bred Border Collie, two years old tomorrow. Maybe these dogs are young enough that I will go before they do. . .

My parents don't seem to believe me that it is normal for Aussies not to have a tail. It is a bit odd but then again while we were up there this weekend their dog managed to wipe out everything on the coffee table with hers so maybe it's not so bad to have a dog with no tail.
