My college is quite liberal and tolerant of the LGBTQ? whatever-you-want-to-call-it community, and while I never knew that many queers while back in high school, I've made so many queer friends at college that I no longer even think about it, or are surprised by their sexuality (one of the first things one of my current best friends said to me when I met him welcome week was "yeah, I've sucked a few cocks in my time" and this coming from a pretty masculine guy who's fucked around with a few girls). Plus, the queers I knew back home in North Jersey were of a weird, antisocial 4chan type, so it was refreshing to meet normal socially functional queers.

Having queer friends of all down the sexual and political spectrum, from lesbian to genderqueer, and radical to straight-acting (a term I despise) I've sparked or have witnessed quite a few arguments between radically liberal queers and more conservative ones, usually over the status of genderqueers or transsexuals. I knew two genderqueer people, but I never met an actual transman or transwoman until a couple days ago.

Anyway, I was in the library with two of my straight girl friends, working on a paper together. A black transwoman came up to my friend Sarah and started talking to her, and while I didn't realize at first that she was a transsexual, she bluntly made it apparent within seconds of meeting her.

She informed us proudly that she was a transsexual, and while I was somewhat interested in her, she was long-winded and had something of an annoying voice, and I was really busy with the paper. The transwoman was mostly talking to the girls, but she paused to talk to me once:

"So are you one of those queers too? It's always good to have a few more."

"No, I'm straight," I answered.

"Oh," she said, her tone changing entirely. "Well, I'm a TRANNY! I hope I don't scare the straight boy too much, huh girls?"

I basically thought 'whatever' and went back to my paper. I tuned into their conversation here and there; she was talking about if she would be able to have a child, and saying "I hope I have a little queer boy or a queer girl! Oh, I hope it wouldn't be a straight boy most of all..."

She also began to tell a story about her being stoned when she was nine years old. "They ran up to me and started calling me names and throwing rocks at me. I was trans-based at nine years old, it was sad...transbashed, it was probably around '83 or '84, I've been trans-bashed for over twenty years by straights..."

At this point, she turned to me again and reiterated, "Yep, I'm a tranny!"

A bit baffled by her, I said "Yeah, I know" and went back to my paper. She went on and on, repeating several times that she had been stoned and that she loves hanging out with queers, and wouldn't want a queer child, and that she doesn't feel comfortable around straight people. Especially straight men. She also complained that gays these days all want to be 'straight-acting' and that pissed me off so much I nearly said something, but figured it wasn't worth it.

After mentioning how mean straights were to her and how she was happy to have a lot of queer friends and how she was stoned, she said goodbye to the girls, and then as a parting remark to me, said "I hope I didn't frighten you too much!"

"No, you're not that frightening," I said, and she awkwardly nodded and walked away.

Just the assumption that because I was straight I was afraid of all things queer was a little disgusting and offensive, but the general hatred against the way straights act, even in the term straight-acting gays was bizarre. There's no gene that makes queers lisp and act effeminate, it's just a way to purposely exclude yourself from society. Nonconformity for the sake of nonconformity stopped being cool for me in middle school, so I shouldn't have to hear people say "heteronormative" and "heteropatriarchy" now that I'm nearly 19.

I don't know how queer or how straight that Ubersite has become since I've been gone, it wasn't all that much when I used to post consistently (Zoidberg was the only queer I can recall) but I'd like to think that we can all just let each other be and let each other fuck who we want without having to call each other sinful faggots or patriarchal breeders.

While you ponder this point, look at this really gay picture I found.

In my head, the part of the tranny in this post was played by Flip Wilson, which made it pretty enjoyable.

You'll probably have to look him up on Wikipedia.

I was just thinking about my response here and when I mentioned my own friends' images, I didn't mean to imply that I think they should be standard, or that I equate effeminateness or flamboyance in themselves with overcompensation, or find those qualities annoying at all. There are way too many factors that shape both our personalities and our sexualities, even sometimes exclusive from each other, for me to believe that someone's sexual preference should or shouldn't define their level of assertiveness or extroversion or choice of gender role. That was just bugging me and I wanted to clear it up.

I hear you. I have a close knit circle of friends that includes both heteros and a whole bunch of gay. It so happens that none of the men are particularly effeminate looking, acting or dressing, and chances are if I were walking down the street with any one of them, at a glance we'd be perceived as a straight couple. I have no problem with flamboyance in itself, but what I call "defensive flamboyant" personalities can become very grating. Whenever I encounter them, I try to remind myself that chances are it's overcompensation for a deep-seated insecurity over the fact that some people of this nature have been ostracized (most definitely true for many TGs) or never felt like they fit comfortably into a social role. As obnoxious as it can be, the reality of their isolation is really, really sad. And then sometimes, I just realize that there are attention whores of all kinds, and some of them happen to be GLBT.

A woman at work had a sex change operation to become a man, which I'm told is much more unusual than the other way around. She did this after having worked there for years. It was fucking creepy. She grew a full beard. Everyone was very creeped out. The HR lady had to counsel us, to explain we weren't allowed to reveal in any way how creeped out we were. She had to do this so the company wouldn't get sued. But secretly, she told me she was creeped out, too.

I would like to echo all the indifference below. People around here REALLY CARE about GLBTWFS and people constantly ask me what I think, and "I dont give a fuck" hardly ever flies as a response since only one gay person I know is actually comfortable with the fact that I am comfortable with his sexuality.

And I feel alone, until I come to ubersite, where the majority of people are progressively indifferent.

Eh people who let stuff like "I'm a gay!" or "I'm a tranny!" define themself kinda pisses me off. I mean you can be one-dimensional if you want but do it in your own forsaken corner.

No matter what is shoved in my face I usually mock people because of it. But with gay people that now constitutes some kind of hate crime. And you don't want to get the limp wristers against you. They're good at parades and marching against stuff.

==========================

The fact that we actually have "hate crime laws" irritates the fuck out of me. Like, if I kill a guy, it's somehow worse if he's black than if he's white (I'm a cracka). It makes no sense, and further promotes the idea that black people are different from white people, gays are different from straights, etc. Whoever came up with the idea for "hate crime laws" is obviously a member of MENSA because they're so smart.

heterophobia is just as common in the gay community as is homophobia. effeminate men and trannies who usually go through a lot are often a little neurotic about that particular subject. i don't know why you're surprised.

Someone should inform the GLBTwhatever community that their sexual choices have offended everyone they ever will offend and it's time for the obvious ones to stop acting flamboyantly queer for the shock value. No one is shocked any more. No one but equally flamboyant religious types even care any more.
