The Blue Hole. Mysterious and irresistable to all who see it, above and below. This is the most desired destination in The U.S., if you are a diver. I met people from all over the world here, the coolest of the lot were locals who told me stories. They told me that the portion the divers are allowed to enter is but one feather on a hummingbirds wing and that it is a mystical and mysterious place with the aura of terrible danger and desire, where you can dissapear and your remains are found naked and shredded, thousands of miles away in some lake in another state.
Some believe the Blue Hole to be the longest underground waterway in the world. There is a metal grate under the water at 81 feet that prevents people from trying to go in further. From this grate 3000 gallons of the bluest, coolest water comes gushing forth each minute. Never has the end of the sealed off portion been reached. Before the grate was installed, divers insisted on trying....

Rescue divers made a few maps when they went down to find Joe Blow from Kokomo. They mapped only 250 feet with passages going beyond forever. Divers have died here, but the people who live nearby consider the Blue Hole to be the best swmming hole on the planet.
Mike Poucher, cartographer for the National Speleological Society Cave Diving Section, said. "How far does it go? No one knows."
Before the grate was installed, young divers swam their ways silently through dark caves deep beneath the New Mexico desert, feeling the walls for a way back out. As they lost their way, their headlamps dimmed and died, their air supplies seeped away, and they swam from this life into the Great Beyond.

Ah, but that was then and this is now. I arrived before dawn and sat on the ledge with Tweeter and watched the squirrels. Soon came Amanda and Rueben for their morning swim and the tales they told kept us too long and Amanda was late for work. I gave them some beautiful crystal specimens in exchange for the stories they gave me. I will see them again on my way back west. They have many more stories to tell me, for I am the story quilter.

I have not wanted to dive since my incident off Maui, but the swimming here is finer than any place on earth except for Rainbow Pool near my Yosemite hut.

Yes, you can see ALL the way to the bottom, the water is so clear. The color is magical and the locals say this blue water has healing properties. This is a huge spring in the middle of a desert.
The people in these photos are not locals. The blonde lady came from Texas and some of the others came from Kansas just to dive here. If you live here, this is the local swimming hole.
I plan on spending more time in the water and less time taking photos the next time I am here. Actually, I plan on staying and sniffing around for a few acres that might be for sale. This would be a great place to spend some time between meanderings....
