Berty is right to a degree about the differences of culture. I'm not saying I support the abuse of children and woman, but you can't take a passing glance without looking at the deeper context of a different sciety and culture. This is a perfect example, fast look at a picture and heaps of commentors going on about the "pedophile palestinians". Those aren't actually child brides kids.
There are also still some areas that practise arranged marriages, and often girls are wed at a minority age. But you have to dig a little to look at it in the context of local circumstance and culture before making a snap judgement. I'm not saying it's okay or it's not, that would require a much larger discussion beyond the scope of this review. I will say that I don't condone the use of children as sexual objects in any situation or culture. However under most cultures that I'm familiar with that do condone child brides, the marriage is not consumated until years later when the child comes of age. I personally still don't approve, but as I said, you need to look deeper before running off with your condemnation. Arrogance is often the problem with more successful societies in history. Afghanistan is a perfect example, trying to force our one size fits all method of democracy on an entirely foriegn region and culture which is still in the tribal stages of societal development is a recipe for failure. Whether the west stays 3 years or 30, our brand of governance shoved down their throat will only result in a corrupt, inept, and destabilized government.
Here's a true story. I know someone who was married at age 12. She had her first child at 14. She went on to have 6 more. They worked hard and farmed. The children would go on to be successful, wealthy and have families of their own. She lived to the ripe age of 97. Her husband had passed years earlier, but she never re-married and loved him til the day she died. She was proud of her (by that time) enourmous family and lived to see her great-great-grandchildren. If you suggested that she was exploited and things should have been different, she would have slapped you in the face for suggesting it. Was this in Bangladesh? India? No, Canada. Am I advocating that children should be free to wed at 12? Absolutely not. In the current economic and cultural climate, there is no way a child is ready for marriage, and would find it very difficult to ever rise beyond an utterly impoverished state for themselves and their family following this course of action. But back in the 1920s, it was a different cultural and environmental circumstance. The west was not very developed. Homesteading was the name of the game. All it took to raise a family was a little creativity and a lot of hard work. And it worked out.
It may often be that a given cultural norm is indeed a backwards abomination. But, sometimes it not. So Berty does have a valid pont insomuch as you do need to take a closer look at a given situation before makng snap judgements from your cubicle in the USA.

The whole, 'it's their culture' thing doesn't fly anymore. Or shouldn't. Why? Because innocent and/or powerless members of that culture (read children, women, and the poor) usually end up victimized and abused.
Murder is generally frowned upon and forbidden in most areas of the world. But...murder your daughter because she was caught petting with a boy and hey, it's ok. That's your culture! Go you!
