I've always been of the opinion that what consenting adults do in the privacy of their own homes is some more of your damn business. I've also never understood the claim that allowing homosexuals to get married somehow makes a mockery of the institute of marriage. Quite frankly I know plenty of heterosexuals who do that just fine on their own ie. Brittany Spears et al. I also never understood the big deal about it from the gay community. I suppose that marriage is more important to some people than it is to me, but why bother. If you are committed to someone then who the fuck cares about it being a legally recognized union.
Then I got a phone call from my mom yesterday. A long time family friend died rather unexpectedly this week. Well, it was cancer so I don't suppose it was that unexpectedly but I thought she was in remission. Anyway, the thing is this person was in a long time relationship with another woman - GASP. It's a small mountain town in the traditional bible belt so it was all on the down low. Bad pun there, sorry. These two womenz ran one of those little tourist shops that you always see in resort towns. I don't know how long they were together, my whole life anyway. No one ever talked about it, but as I got older and more wise in the ways of the world I clued in that they were a bit more than business partners and roommates.
What occurred to me yesterday is that the community is not going to react in the same way to this death that they would if this were a heterosexual couple. I don't know how this is in the rest of the world, but where I come from when someone loses a spouse they end up in this little cocoon of support. People want to help, but they don't know what to do so they load them up on casseroles and neatly packaged meals with instructions for heating them printed on the lids. They mow the grass, prune the trees, feed the pets, insist on dragging them out to dinner. This goes on for about a year and then they try to fix them up with some other widow/widower/divorcee in the area. If there are any children in the family then god help them because the kids will not know a moment of peace until they escape off to college.
In this case though, people are going to treat her like she lost a good friend and business partner but not like she lost a spouse.

I just think that she should be forced to face the same level of community harassment that other people have to deal with when they lose a spouse.
We're heading up there this weekend for a visit. I figure my family are some of the few people who really know the full scope of what is going on. I'm not really sure what to do. Maybe I'll do what other people do when they don't know what to do but want to do something to help; baked chicken, sourdough rolls, and a delicious green bean casserole.

Anyway, my request here is that if you live in a state where gay marriage is on the ballot, please just take a second and think about people like this before you pull that lever or push that button or whatever is it you do in your state.

Okay let's assume that the arguments against gay marriage are all correct, that marriage is by definition between a man and a woman (and therefore should always be?), that gay marriage would be a mockery of the institution, that it is immoral etc.
What a government should then be doing is weighing the rights of people who hold those beliefs to not feel offended, confronted or academically frustrated ("IT JUST ISN'T REAL MARRIAGE") against the rights of gay people who want to marry the person they love.
In other words, indoninja's "big problem" is slightly unfortunate for him, but why should anyone give two shits? It's certainly not a problem that's worth inflicting a far worse problem on a large sector of the community.

Interesting point re: black folk. Ever since my father-in-law (the whitest, pastiest guy I've ever met (and I live in the midwest)) married this black woman from the ghetto, he's sent my wife these Christmas and birthday cards with paintings of black angels/families etc on them. Marriage, in the United States, used to be limited to only people of the certain race. Indeed, there are Uberers here older than the current state of "traditional" marriage. 1967 was the year that Loving V. Virginia ruled against anti-miscegenation laws. So traditional marriage, as it is now defined as a union between a man and woman of any race where the woman is on equal footing as the man and the reason for marriage is typically love and not economic or social benefit, has existed for roughly thirty-nine years. I'm so tired of what should be a no-brainer taking up so much time and discussion. Does anyone really care if gays can marry...except for gays?... I certainly don't, I have more important things to worry about though I see why gays want to...health insurance, medical proxies, estates, wills and so on..How would you like to live with/love someone your entire life only to be told at the end that you have no rights, don't matter and don't legally exist by doctors, lawyers, the stsate and relatives who probably never bothered with them anyway?
What about the important shit that needs to be discussed and legislated, I resent this no-brainer taking up space and time that could be used to discuss gun control, violence, the war in Iraq, homelessness, AIDS, the death penalty, the sex offender registry etc, etc and so on...everybody has a cause that is dear to them.
Once again, I agree with Loki,it's none of anyones business what anyone does behind closed doors and the SANCTITY of MARRIAGE...that's an oxymoron right up there with "military intelligence".
Examples: J-LO - "He's my soulmate"( how many time we hear that?)...every other month she's married/divorced/getting married again...last time to an already married guy who got a quickie divorce to marry her.
Julia Roberts..married/divorced twice, remarried to husband #2, divorced again and fucks a married cameraman and then buys him from his wife.
Meanwhile..Elton John..with the same partner for years, no scandals. Rosie O'Donnell..steady partner, has kids, wholesome home life. Jodie Foster...same partner for years, kids..no scandals.

Interesting point re: black folk. Ever since my father-in-law (the whitest, pastiest guy I've ever met (and I live in the midwest)) married this black woman from the ghetto, he's sent my wife these Christmas and birthday cards with paintings of black angels/families etc on them. I've always assumed black people do it to remind the rest of us they're black. I'm guessing he does it to convince us he's not racist.

This is why I love Colorado. Referendum I, the domestic partnership ballot issue, CLEARLY states marragie as between a man and a woman *AND* gives basic legal rights like hospital visitation, non-willed property disbursment, spousal insurance coverage etc etc to all gay couples, and makes it illegal for any governmental office in the state or for any corporation that does business in the state to withhold those rights from any couple that presents a valid compact between the parties involved.
It's a win/win, I think. Sure, sure, it's not "marraige" for gays, but marraige isn't a "legal" thing, it's a "religious" thing.
IMHO, I think the government whould get out of "marraige" and say: "If you want to be married, gay or straight, that is up to the individual churches to say yes or no. But if you want to be civilly joined, again gay or straight, line up at the registrar and have your form of payment ready."

There are quite a few churches out there that agree with gay marriage. If you think about it, it's a bit odd that there is a religious ceremony with legal contractual implications. Especially when you throw in the complications of the state then telling the church who does and does not qualify for legal recognition of that ceremony. But then again, I suppose the same argument could be made for polygamy couldn't it.

My best friend is a conservative, so we have some fun discussing politics - luckily she's a thinking conservative and I'm a thinking liberal, so we can find what middle ground there may be and disagree without shrieking at each other and such.
We both sort of agreed that the term "marriage" is a huge part of the sticking point. Her theory is that any couple, regardless of orientation, should be able to become a civil union (or other, more creative term if necessary) under the law, which would cover all the legal stuff, i.e. who gets your stuff when you die, etc., but that to be married they just need to find a church that's down with marrying them, therefore having the rubber stamp of "married" rather than..."unionized" I guess.
Makes a fair amount of sense to me.
